of hurricane sandy. anyone want to join a motorcycle gang and take over the streets? after the show. more than 8 million people lost power last night which means no one's watching right now. , that normally good advice went awry. sandy is showing us the drill. traveling widely taking a carry on with the must have items. earlier this year, on a trip to italy, things got off to a rocky start for sandy and her husband. >> they're told on the plane before we got on the plane that the overhead bins were full. check your carry on. which is what we did. >> then, what happened? >> then, we got to rome exit wasn't there. >> took took insights and sounds of italy. they bought new. luggage arrived they went to pick it up. >> we had to go to naples, pick it up. and that was probably an hour ride on the bus. and then, we had to take a cab from the airport to the train station where we were going to roevm -- rome. >> sandy put in a claim for cost. >> under wear, pajamas, a sweater, jacket, then we had to$1b+Ñ buy a bus ticket to the naples airport then cab fare to the train station. >> what did she bill the airline? less than 70s itdz can't come, so i decided okay. 7 on your side is going to be my way of getting the money back. soy did contact 7 on your side. and was called back. he c

to be her halloween costume. hurricane sandy put it on hold and she did a wonderful benefit. to help those who needed it. >> she'll be appearing in full facial crystal this morning. >> is she? >> i'm just kidding. >> i'm wearing mine now. >> we'll find out in a little bit. >> just kidding. >> can't you tell. >> to storms slamming the west. sam has the latest on that. >> i mean, five days, you think about it, november 27th, these folks have had back-to-back storms. about 150-mile-per-hour wind gusts in the mountains. even on the shorelines, a good 70, 70-mile-an-hour winds. pictures like this, with trees down. you've had boulders in the middle of the roads. roads closed. flooding, power lines down. when you look at the rainfall totals it's exactly what we expected out of this triple-hit of storms. monterey coming out with more than 18 inches of rain. all the way into the san francisco area, almost 4 inches of rain in that time period. three storms shoving that rain up against the coastline. give that rain a lift and you get the total, 12 to 18 inches of rain as a three-event total in those

partly thanks to superstorm sandy buyers returning to show rooms in november after the waters receded and replacement demand increased after hundreds of thousands of vehicles damaged or destroyed by sandy. as for trading, manufacturing in china helping give u.s. stocks a lift today. report on u.s. manufacturing for november in a few minutes we'll see how that goes we expect it to slow a little. so far, green arrows across the board first trading day of december, dow, s&p and nasdaq higher, bloomberg index up 1%. the maker of lucky charms hoping adults will find the cereal magically delicious, mills plans a campaign nationwide next year. adults are an attractive market for the cereal makers they are pressure for marketing sugary products to kids. today is the 20th anniversary of the text message, the first text sent was "merry christmas "now 1992. by 2016 texting may increase 40% from today's levels more than nine trillion texts generating 127 billion dollars in revenue. live at the new york stock exchange, i'm jane king. >>> lol! >>> i know. we can smile a little with weather turning

filthy that is. i'd rather write a letter, to be honest. previouses to hurricane sandy, the only people using those were pimps. now a local pay phone company said since the power went out, they've seen a 2,500% increase in pay phone use. that is -- do you have any idea how hard it is to play draw something on a pay phone? there's also a severe gasoline shortage in new york and new jersey. 75% of the gas stations in the state of new jersey are closed right now. people are waiting in line for hours and the worst part of that is, the people driving priuses who laugh and give you the finger as they go by. but this -- and i don't want to preach here, but -- this is why it's so important to bury a dinosaur in your yard. you have to plan ahead. cbs-2 news stopped by an overcrowded gas station in the city today where tensions are running even higher than they usually do in new york. >> i'm coming. >> honking and hurling obscenities, drivers nearly coming to blows. >> look at that. he's jumping. >> it was outrage. at a than mat tan gas station. >> he's jumping. this is a line! i follow the line,

sandy, but one of them is going so far above and beyond that it's almost nuts. newark mayor cory booker has been inviting people to his house. he tweeted this yesterday to a newark resident who asked him for help. he said, there's someone at my house now, eric, i've got space you can relax in, charge devices and even a working dvd player. come by, @myserenelove. this either makes him the coolest or creepiest mayor ever. i'm not sure. he's either extremely generous or one of his friends is playing an awesome practical joke on him right now. around a dozen strangers showed up at his house yesterday. they watched movies, they ordered food. some of them slept over. i think he had more than 30 people over at his house tonight. we're actually thinking about having our after party at the mayor's house in newark. good for him. to trick or treat tonight. in fact, because of hurricane sandy, new jersey governor chris christie actually cancelled halloween. he tweeted this today. he said, it's just not safe yet to be out trick or treating. so, halloween has officially been postponed until monday. does he really have the authority to -- [ laughter ] -- cancel halloween? this seems very suspicious to me. especially considering the fact that he just posted this photograph on instagram. [ laughter and applause ] i believe he wants all the candy for himself. i'm sure you'll all be happy to know that even though many homes on the jersey shore were destroyed this week, the one that snooki and jwoww lived in is fine. the "jersey shore" house survived the hurricane. unfortunately, so did "the real housewives of new jersey." they're all okay. god had one chance and he blew it.
